2005 EQIP Deadline Approaching

The application deadlines for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) for funding this fiscal year is February 15, 2005.

Eligible projects include livestock and cropland conservation practices. Each project will go through a ranking procedure and compete with other projects for the funding available in Sheridan County. Local funding will be distributed in two categories, livestock and cropland, and two classes, less than $30,000 and more than $30,000 in each category. Anticipated funding for Sheridan County in 2005 may approach $400,000.

For more information about EQIP contact NRCS in Plentywood at 406-765-1801 or visit the NRCS EQIP webpage at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/eqip.

Producer Input

Last summer we asked you for your input on what the major natural resource concerns or problems were in N.E. Montana. A lot of you responded and we now present the top 5 results in each category of that survey.

According to the survey:

  • The most important natural resource area of concern to you is noxious weeds, followed by water quality, water availability, agricultural sustainability, and agriculture productivity and conservation.

  • You get most of your accurate information about natural resources from the Sheridan County Conservation District, then from the County Extension Service, NRCS, Wheat Growers Association, and FSA.

  • You said the Sheridan County Conservation District should concentrate its education and service information efforts on full-time farmers and ranchers and state and local politicians followed by the local business community, national politicians, and schools.

  • The most important service the Sheridan County Conservation District can provide is conservation planning, then cost-share programs, information, soil survey and soil information, and erosion and sediment control.

  • We also asked you to tell us what you think is the area most in need of natural resource conservation assistance. You told us the area most in need is grazing followed by the Big Muddy Creek, crop rotation, helping young farmers, and salinity.

In next month’s issue of Conservation Notes we’ll show you how we are responding to your concerns. In the meantime, if you have a topic or situation you feel needs our attention or you need assistance with, please give us a call at 406-765-1801 or stop by the office at 119 N. Jackson in Plentywood.
