CONSERVATIONCOOPERATOR OF THE YEARSheridan County Conservation District’s 2005 Conservation Cooperator of the YearRick and Donna Hilyard
Congratulations to Rick and Donna Hilyard for being chosen as Sheridan County’s 2005 Outstanding Cooperator. Rick has been working with the Conservation District and the Plentywood NRCS Field Office over the years to achieve a number of personal conservation goals. Rick received an Environmental Quality Incentives Program contract in 2003 to assist him with several practices. Rick has seeded cropland back to native and tame grasses and buffer strips along the Big Muddy and Plentywood Creek. Rick also used the Conservation District’s Aerway to renovate his rangeland as well as spray out invading cactus. One of Rick’s major projects was a pipeline, tank, and cross- fence combination to get a cattle rotation to better utilize his existing rangeland and new grass seedings. Some of Rick’s other practices include tree row plantings, cover crops, and improving wildlife habitat. Congratulations Rick and Donna. |

SHERIDAN COUNTY CONSERVATIONDISTRICT’S OIL BRINERECLAMATION PROJECT
Shane Halverson of Can-Do Construction removes salt contaminated soil from old mud pit The District’s oil brine reclamation project is wrapping up this fall. The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation grant ended at the end of October. Over 20 local landowners have been associated with this project. Activities ranged from soil and water testing to soil amendments to complete reclamation of a mud pit at an abandoned oil drilling site at a cost of over $24,000. More work needs to be done, but the issue now is acquiring additional funding.
